How Goats Transformed Sammi’s Life

How Goats Transformed Sammi’s Life

A Story of Hope, Resilience, and Sustainable Change

Sammi and her husband, Wahid Baksh, residents of Hari Beller Shumali village in Gwadar, struggled daily to provide even the most basic necessities for their family. With Wahid’s monthly income of PKR 19,000 from fishing—barely enough to cover food and essentials—the family lived in hard times.

“Some nights, I lay awake wondering how we’d afford the next day’s meals,” Sammi admits.

Like many women in her community, she longed to contribute but lacked the resources to help build a better future for her children.

Then, hope arrived in the form of the Gwadar Lasbela Livelihoods Support Project (GLLSP-II), funded by IFAD and implemented by NRSP.

A Goat, A Dream, and A New Beginning

After being validated as a low-income household under BISP’s Poverty Scorecard, Sammi was selected for support under the Livelihood Investment Plan (LIP). Given the choice of income-generating assets, she didn’t hesitate: goat farming was her answer.

“I’ve always known how to care for animals,” Sammi shared. “Goats don’t just give milk—they multiply. I knew this was our chance.”

With six healthy goats provided by the project, along with training on livestock management, Sammi’s journey from financial struggle to self-sufficiency began.

Milk, Money, and a Brighter Future

Within months, Sammi’s goats started yielding 5 liters of milk daily. Instead of spending PKR 200/day on milk for her family, she now had extra to sell—earning PKR 500/day from neighbors and local markets.

But the real miracle? Five new kids were born, expanding her herd to 11 goats—an asset worth over PKR 150,000.

“Before, we lived day by day,” Sammi says, her voice brimming with pride. “Now, I contribute to my family’s income. My husband doesn’t carry the burden alone anymore.”

Beyond Income: Empowerment & Dignity

This intervention did more than boost Sammi’s finances—it restored her confidence.

  • She is no longer just a homemaker but a businesswoman.
  • Her children now have nutritious milk daily, improving their health.
  • The family has a safety net—goats are a sellable asset in times of need.
